I don’t need to tell you that we live in troubled times.

Consider for a moment: Government spending is rising out of control. Our national debt is spiraling higher. Unemployment is hovering near 10%.

Our education system is broken. Our military is stretched to the breaking point. And the cost of everyday goods and services continues to creep higher and higher.

Meanwhile, the “remedies” thrust upon us by those in Washington – ‘stimulus’ plans, bailouts and good, old-fashioned money-printing – only make the situation worse, not better.

As an active duty JAG officer, I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States.

That oath didn’t have an expiration date.

That is why I am seeking the Republican Party nomination for U.S. Senate from the state of Connecticut.

My name is Brian Hill, and I believe there is no more important time for constitutionalist Republicans to run for higher office.

I represent a new kind of Connecticut Republican.

I was born and raised in Connecticut. I am a proud graduate of our public schools and one of our state universities. And I diligently worked my way through college and law school.

I’m not a self-financed millionaire looking for something to do and I’m not a career politician attracted to power.

I spent twelve years as an active duty officer in both the Navy and U.S. Army.

Today I am a small business owner of a private practice law firm in downtown Hartford.

I'm an ordinary person taking on the extraordinary task of bringing order to the chaotic political system that is destroying our American middle class, and indeed, our country.

I believe in the free market. I believe that we will only create jobs when we embrace free market principles and make it easier, not harder, for citizens to start and grow small businesses. It’s time to stop redistributing our wealth and to start generating more of it.

I believe we have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. Washington has been engaging in out-of-control spending for years, and it’s time we put a check on that. I want to cut government spending, eliminate double taxation and take a chainsaw to federal red tape.

I believe that local government is best. I support keeping our tax dollars in Connecticut, and leaving education and health care in the hands of individuals, not Washington bureaucrats. I believe in more competition, not less.

I believe in a strong national defense. I believe we can have a first-class military while being smarter about how we spend our money. Having served myself, I’ve witnessed terrible waste in defense spending. Our focus should be on putting America’s interests first, not nation-building overseas.

My campaign will strive to share these principles with Connecticut citizens from all walks of life.

The message of empowerment over entitlement brings people together, and is one that I intend to spread to all communities across our state.

I will campaign as hard for the vote in the hilltowns as I will in our cities and along our shore. No other candidate is as uniquely poised to reach all Nutmeggers.

Like you, I still believe in the greatness of our country. Only in America could someone like me run for high office – and win.

Together, we will overcome our challenges and once again make America that “shining city upon a hill.”

Although Hurricane Irene lost some of her punch when she hit Greenwich early Sunday morning - the winds and rain were not quite as bad as had been forecasted - the storm did bring down quite a few trees and large branches in the North Mianus section of town.

08/29/11 Bronx Man Arrested At Riverside Pharmacy

Anthony Spell, 53, of Bronx N.Y. was arrested and charged with prescription fraud, criminal attempt to possess a controlled substance and forgery on August 25.

Police said they were called to CVS, 1239 E. Putnam Avenue, on a report of an individual trying to pass a forged prescription at about 3:43 p.m.

On arrival, police determined that Spell was trying to pass a forged prescription for the painkiller oxycodone.

Mr. Spell was held on a $5,000 bond and is to be arraigned at a later date.

Temple Sholom is pleased to report that our building will open tomorrow morning at 9:00am, to offer a gathering place for all those without power in our community. We are able to offer kosher food, coffee, electricity to charge mobile devices and computers, and WiFi access. We also will have our Teen Lounge open as a place for children and teens to socialize.

HERE IS THE LATEST GREENWICH NEWS ABOUT THE AFTERMATH OF IRENE AND HOW TOWN RESIDENTS WILL BE EFFECTED:

Rampant coastal flooding, rivers and streams throughout Greenwich were well above flood stages, leading to several emergency evacuations.

The number of Greenwich residents without power is close to 14,000.

The eye of the storm passed through Greenwich at high tide, causing a nightmarish situation.

Hurricane Gloria hit during low tide during 1985, resulting in storm surges around 5 to 6 feet. The 1938 hurricane hit during high tide, causing extensive damage.

Hurricane / Tropical Storm Irene is officially "Post Tropical". The last public advisory was just issued by the National Hurricane Center.

But here comes Jose ....

There will be quiet weather today-upper 70s under sunshine.

Town officials have consolidated the two shelters it operated as Irene rolled in Saturday evening - neither shelter was at capacity.

First Selectman Peter Tesei is sleeping at town hall due to a lack of power at home.

Parking rules will be suspended Monday, but will resume Tuesday.

Byram beach will be closed Monday, with an anticipated reopening Tuesday. The beach experienced moderate erosion, downed trees, a partial seawall collapse and a boat that grounded on the beach.

Byram Park will be open Monday, while Greenwich Point will open to boaters at noon, but only to those who present a boater identification.

Ferry service for Great Captains Island has been canceled for Monday and will be resumed Friday, while ferry service for Island Beach, where a section of the pier dislodged in the storm, is canceled for Monday and Tuesday.

The town Emergency Operations Center will be open Monday, with officials planning to make an announcement about the state of emergency by afternoon.

Public Schools will still start for Greenwich public school students as planned on Thursday, but all activities, mostly athletic practices, have all been cancelled for tomorrow.

The streets of Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich were very quiet as of 7:30 p.m. - and only a handful of businesses, mostly restaurants, gas stations and liquor stores, were open - as Hurricane Irene approached.

Town Resident Warns Of Even More Greenwich Streets That Are In Danger Of Flooding

Michael Finkbeiner: "The selectmen should base the street list on the FEMA FIRM maps, which are for the National Flood Insurance Program."

Where are the Pemberwick streets?

The Above SLOSH model looks like an evacuation zone map for Pemberwick, but Mr. Finkbiener says it is not.

However the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map Firmette clip for a small section of the Byram River, should be compared to the SLOSH Map used by the Town of Greenwich according to Mr. Finkbiener.

In a CATAGORY 1 Hurricane, which Irene may not be at Connecticut landfall, only the lime green zone is indicated for impact.

In Pemberwick, this would only be Den Lane and River St, since rainfall is not included.

Once rainfall is added as a hazard, a very different picture emerges.

In an email interview Mr, Finkbiener told Greenwich Roundup ....

"The SLOSH map is mis-leading, since many residents may read the map as an evacuation zone map, which it is not, and conclude they are safe because they are in zone 2 or 3, which don't apply to this storm's slosh.

This is false, they are at risk due to river and stream urban flooding - not tidal storm surge.

For the purposes of the Pemberwick - Glenville area, the only Pemberwick streets on the list are there due to tidal flooding, which is not the primary risk.

And for the same reason, no Glenville streets are included, although many are at high risk right now!

Therefore, I urge the Pemberwick - Glenville Association and the Greenwich Emergency Management office to reformulate warnings and evacuations, based on the FEMA Flood hazard, which includes tidal, but more importantly, river and stream flooding due to excessive rainfall and intensity, which will be the killers in this storm event.

Again, to explain - SLOSH is the wind and tide risk without rainfall. FEMA FIRM is the combined flood risk based on hydrology, hydraulics of piping infrastructure, and the interaction between tides, storm surge and rainfall runoff."

The Town's Evacuation program appears to be based on the SLOSH Category I list only, not the FEMA Flood Insurance Risk mapping that is the basis of the Flood Hazard Overlay Regulations of the Town, Sec 6-139.

The Street list and SLOSH maps used by the Selectmen represent wind driven tidal flooding by salt water only, and ignore the rainfall, runoff, and urban flooding hazard of the rain component of the storm.

Pemberwick Streets are not included for this reason. Neither are the other non-shoreline flood prone areas included. The Byram, Mianus, and Horseneck Brook watershed flooding components are ignored.

However, IRENE is likely to be remembered for its rain and flooding components as the primary hazards.

The Town's Emergency Management Response should rely on the FEMA Maps of June 18, 2010 to assess flood risk and hazard.

I testified to this effect on June 1, 2010 at the P&Z hearing for the revised Flood Hazard Overlay Regulations.

Mr. Finkbeiner seems to be saying that ....

It is important to understand that the SLOSH model is only for storm surge, not rain or fresh water flooding.

The Town appears not looking at the flood impact of rain in this analysis.

One must add the sea water run-up in the SLOSH model to the rivers and streams carry local flood waters into Pemberwick.

The SLOSH plus high-tide makes this a very serious event for everyone flooded in 2007.

Michael Finkbreiner Added These Comments To This Report:

I mis-spoke about Pemberwick Streets - most of them are on the Selectman's Notice of 8/26 6:15 pm. but on the map they are for hurricane Cat 2 & 3. Add Cat four, and you have a map similar to the FEMA FIRM for Pemberwick.

But the Glenville streets and all the other flood prone streets subject to river and stream flooding, but not tidal storm surge, are missing.

The reason is that the SLOSH model is for the purpose of separating the rising tide risk from the river flooding risk coming from upstream watershed areas. This is necessary in writing an evacuation plan for different types of storm events.

Thus the Selectmen, and specifically by identified parties of Mr. Warzoha and Ms. Baisley in their Press Release, representing Emergency Management and Dept of Health, have mis-led the public by mis-use of the SLOSH Model map document, and lack of a rainfall-flooding evacuation plan.

This may prove to be a life threatening error.

If Irene arrives as a tropical storm event, the SLOSH wave-energy run-up models are of NO relevance.

What is needed is focus on the lack of infrastructure repairs, and urban hydrology appropriate to coverage conditions of land use in Greenwich.

Community Update and Open House Scheduled for September 7, 2011

General Note:

It is understood that members of the community are anxious for information regarding the use of the fields and the student parking at Greenwich High School as well as the results of the environmental testing. Please be assured that the many agencies, departments and organizations involved are working at an expedited rate in order to assess the situation, and to plan for and conduct interim remediation efforts with a focus on opening fields as soon as possible to accommodate Fall sports and to minimize the disruption that a contingency plan will have on other fields in the community.

Rumors about the status of the fields persist. We encourage the community to rely on these written updates from the Town/Schools/Building Committee and written correspondence from your coaches and/or Principals regarding the details of your program. Please check emails and the District/High School Web Site regularly for these updates.

In general, the organizations involved are working until the last minute to open a field, as in the case of Cardinal Stadium, and so there is little opportunity for advanced notice. As soon as information has been confirmed and final decisions have been made concerning any aspect of this situation it will be communicated as quickly as possible. The community’s cooperation and patience as we navigate this very complex situation is appreciated.

Environmental Testing/Remediation:

The environmental evaluation at Greenwich High School is ongoing. Over 300 soil samples have been taken to date.

Early analysis reflects levels of PCBs from ‘non-detected’ to various levels in defined areas above the applicable cleanup standards. The Environmental Consultant (DTC) is developing an interim remediation plan in order to address the areas where contaminants were detected above the standards in order to open more of the fields. The applicable Federal and State cleanup standards for PCBs in soil is 1 milligram/kilogram (mg/kg). The attached figure depicts the PCB results obtained to date for shallow soil across the athletic fields. Other contaminants including arsenic and chlordane were detected at concentrations exceeding their respective cleanup standards in localized areas within the fields.

GHS West Parking Lot:

The removal of the contaminated piles of dirt in the west (back) parking lot and the restoration

of that lot for use will take at least 3-4 weeks. The investigation, removal and remediation of the contaminated soil is overseen by Federal, State and Local environmental and health officials, as well as two entities separate from the contractor licensed to remove the contaminated soil and remediate the site. There will be ongoing air-monitoring to

ensure the safety of all students, staff and workers during the soil removal process.

Health & Safety:

The Connecticut and Greenwich Departments of Health have provided information on PCB’s in the documents attached and posted to the web site. Exposure to the risks of PCB’s result from direct contact, inhalation, and/or ingestion. The District, Town and Building Committee are working closely with State and Federal Environmental and Health agencies/departments in order to minimize possible exposure. Air-monitoring has been ongoing both within and

outside of the building and will continue during the soil removal process. Thus far air monitoring has not detected any levels of PCB’s above standards. Fields and Parking lots will not be re-opened without the approval of the Local, State and Federal agencies involved.

The information that we have received to date tells us that no PCB’s have been detected in the ambient air, so exposure would be limited to contact with contaminated soil. While testing is still ongoing, we have been able to determine that most of the PCB’s have been detected either in deep soil borings, or in localized shallower areas around the fields.

The majority of the fields and parking lots have shown PCB’s are at acceptable levels. The Town/District has worked closely with State and Federal environmental and health officials who have approved opening fields as soil sample results are received and interim remedial measures are implemented to remove defined areas of PCB contaminated soil.

Parking/Traffic/Busing:

Parking at Greenwich High School is restricted to staff only for the start of school due to the removal of the contaminated piles of dirt in the west (back) parking lot and the restoration of that lot for use. It is estimated that this process will take at least 3-4 weeks. Therefore, student parking will not be permitted until further notice.

Plans have been developed to ensure bus capacity and to enhance traffic control measures. If eligible for transportation, please encourage students to take the bus in order to avoid a back up in drop off and pick up lines. If you must drive your children to school, please allow extra time. The start of the school day will NOT be delayed because of traffic.

Please note that parking on private property without permission will result in ticketing and/or towing. Parking on Hillside Road along the school property is permitted parking only and is restricted for staff.

Fields/Athletics:

Greenwich High School

Field #1 or Cardinal Stadium has been re-opened for practice. The Environmental Consultants, Local, State and Federal Agencies are working tirelessly in order to assess the situation, plan for and implement interim remediation efforts in order to properly address the areas of the fields that have been identified with PCB levels higher than the cleanup standard.

The goal is to address fields 3, 4, 6 & 7 in the immediate short-term in order to ready them for the fall sports program.

For the start of the season, practices and tryouts will be held at the Cardinal Stadium, middle

schools, Julian Curtiss School, and/or Greenwich Country Day School fields.

Athletic Department for details. This information will also be available on the District and high school web sites.

Coaches will communicate additional specifics directly to their teams as necessary.

Central, Eastern & Western Middle Schools:

The fall interscholastic middle school program will be delayed in order to cooperate with and accommodate the high school’s interscholastic athletic program. The high school teams will be using the middle school fields for practice after school until such time as the high school fields can be readied for use and re-opened. The goal is to have the fields open at the high school by mid to late September.

School Operations - Start of School:

At this time, school will open for students as scheduled.

MISA Building Committee: The Greenwich High School Music Instructional Space and Auditorium (GHS-MISA) project is moving ahead as scheduled. The North and South parking lots will be completed before the start of school.

Communications:

* Updates are posted to the District and Greenwich High School Web Sites as new information becomes available: www.greenwichschools.org - click on “Updates on Environmental Testing at GHS”.

* ParentLink/Email Communications are sent directly to GPS/GHS families as updates are released and new information is available.

* The Board of Education will receive an update on the MISA project and a status update on the Environmental Evaluation at its August 25, 2011 meeting, 7:00 PM at the Town Hall Meeting Room.

* The next regularly scheduled GHS-MISA Building Committee meeting is September 6, 2011, 7:30 AM, Havemeyer Building.

* The District will host a Open House on September 7, 2011, 7:00 PM-9:00 PM at Greenwich High School in order to provide an opportunity for high school families, neighbors, and the broader community to receive an overview of the situation and to ask questions of the various departments and agencies involved.

Background:

In mid July 2011, during the course of the excavation work for the Greenwich High School Music Instructional Space and Auditorium (MISA) project, unexpected soil conditions were discovered in the West (or back) parking lot, adjacent to the fields, which prompted immediate environmental testing.

The site work in the west lot was stopped and the excavation area was contained. The initial tests indicated the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations above acceptable standards for residential and commercial use, as determined by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), in deep soil in the excavation.

A second round of samples was taken on July 20th and included soil and indoor and outdoor air testing. The results of the air quality tests indicate all selected factors were within acceptable levels. The results of the second round of soil samples confirmed the previous results, which showed concentrations of PCBs above the residential cleanup standard along with low levels of some metals.

On July 29, 2011 the results of a third set of shallow soil samples taken closer to fields 3 and 4, reflected PCBs levels that are above acceptable standards for residential or commercial use. These results prompted the closure of all fields as a precaution until a more comprehensive understanding of the extent of the issue could be determined.

The Greenwich Public Schools/Board of Education, the Town of Greenwich and the GHS MISA Building Committee are working in collaboration to address the environmental concerns of the fields at Greenwich High School.

Licensed Environmental Professionals have been contracted to plan for and conduct more comprehensive testing.

The Town, State Departments of Health and Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have also been consulted

08/25/11 Greenwich Police Department Has Made An Arrest In The Death Of Christopher Harris, Of Riverside, Who Died At The Age Of 18 On Jan. 8, 2011

William Nelson, 18 was arrested overdose death of Riverside teenager Christopher Harris, who was found unresponsive at his Florence Road home in January.

Greenwich police had an active arrest warrant for Mr. Nelson, who turned himself in.

The GDP charged him with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and conspiracy to possess narcotics.

The police expect two more arrests in this case.

On January 8th, Christopher Harris was transported to Stamford Hospital after being found unresponsive around 9 a.m.

Christopher Harris Sr. and medics both attempted to revive Harris at the home.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:25 a.m.

The State Medical Examiner's office ruled in April that Christopher Harris' death was an accidental overdose by acute opiate intoxication.

Four friends, one of whom was Nelson, went to teenaged Harris' home to visit January 7th and during the night they all smoked marijuana.

Mr. Harris also consumed some Xanax that was provided by a third friend at the drug party.

Later in the evening Mr. Nelson drove to New Rochelle, N.Y., with one of the friends from the drug party to buy the painkiller Opana from a street dealer.

Later, Harris and a friend snorted the contents of one of the pills.

Mr. Nelson stated to police that he snorted half of his pill and threw the other half away because he didn't like it.

A third pill was unused.

Mr. Harris went upstairs to bed in his parents home, while the other friends slept off their intoxication in the basement.

Mr. Nelson posted bond and is due in court Aug. 31.

New Greenwich Chamber exec vows to boost membership

Meet the new face of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce -- Marcia O'Kane.
The organization, recruiting from the nonprofit ranks, formally introduced O'Kane as its new executive director during a Tuesday news conference at Town Hall.

O'Kane is currently president and executive director of the Stamford Senior Center.
Prior to holding that position, she was director of finance and administration of Person-to-Person, a volunteer-driven agency in Darien that helps families in need.....

.....A receiving line of chamber members greeted O'Kane after the announcement, as well as First Selectman Peter Tesei and state Reps. Livvy Floren, R-149th District, and Alfred Camillo, R-151st District.

"I wish her well, and I'm glad she's a resident of the town of Greenwich," Tesei, the town's chief elected official, said in an interview. "Certainly, she knows the town."

Weber declined to say how much the position will pay O'Kane, whose first day at the chamber will be Sept. 12. A person familiar with the search process estimated the annual salary to be in the neighborhood of $85,000 to $90,000.

O'Kane succeeds Mary Ann Morrison, who abruptly resigned in April as the business organization's leader of 11 years. Morrison's title was president and chief executive, whereas O'Kane will serve as executive director. Weber said the chamber looked at peer organizations in communities of the same size and determined executive director was a more appropriate job title.

Morrison landed a job with the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, where she is vice president in charge of membership. She is also spearheading a private fundraising effort to build a Sept. 11 memorial at Grass Island in Greenwich, which would be the second such monument in town.....

...."It's critical that the chamber supports and promotes the business community, both retail and corporate," said Tesei, who met O'Kane for the first time Tuesday.

Asked about what she would do to retain mom-and-pop stores in a retail climate tilting toward national chains and high-end boutiques, O'Kane said she would strive to promote small businesses, whether it be through advertising opportunities or offering coupons.

"We need to work with the small businesses to get that visibility out," O'Kane said.....

RIVERSIDE RESIDENTS SAY THE GREENWICH TIME'S LOCAL NEWS COVERAGE IS A JOKE

Hearst Newspapers daily illustrates a point on what’s wrong with much of the “local news media” today.

The Greenwich Time's news gatherers with great access to specific click of the town's news makers and they are inclined to ‘pitch them softballs’ rather than ask the more important in-depth questions.

The good news (pun intended) here is that access is rarely an absolute requirement for solid, in-depth reporting. In fact, with smart research (clue sniffing) and an understanding of the beat they cover a news gatherer can dig deep and drill out the facts to develop a good story with.

There is a reason that the money losing Greenwich Time can only distribute 5,000 to 6,000 papers a day and that the New York Times has a better penetration rate in the area.

Greenwich Time reporters just run town hall and board of education press releases through the spell checker, before hitting the publish button. If the Greenwich Time wants to stop its steady decline, then it needs to get and hit the bricks and talk to the towns taxpayers and parents..

Yesterday Greenwich Was A Buzz About The Earthquake And The Greenwich Time's Website Had No Local Coverage And Regurgitated Connecticut Post Reports Out Of Bridgeport.

Greenwich Man Faces Drug Charges Following Car Crash

(Patch)

A 22-year-old Riverside man was charged with possession of marijuana, resisting an officer, and several other drug and motor vehicle offenses for allegedly getting into an accident while intoxicated and then fleeing the scene, according to Stamford Police.

According to police reports, Christopher Lund was arrested at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, after he apparently lost control of his 1998 Ford Explorer while traveling east on Cold Spring Road in Stamford and crashed into a traffic light in the center median.

"Officers were dispatched to the area of Cold Spring Rd. at Randall Ave. on a report of a motor vehicle vehicle accident with injuries," according to a police report. "Dispatch advised responding officers that one of the operators was chasing the other operator in the street, attempting to fight him."

According to the report, a witness told police that the driver of the SUV, later identified as Lund, fled the scene. The officer determined that it was a one-car accident, and searched Lund's vehicle. The officer found 2.2 grams of marijuana and a multi-colored glass pipe, according to the report.

More officers arrived and combed the area for Lund. "We heard mumbling from a large brush, and upon approaching the brush, we found Christopher Lund," SPD states. Witnesses described Lund as having "scratches and small cuts."

Police said they had difficulty taking Lund into custody, because his level of intoxication made it difficult to remove him from the wooded, fenced area where he was found. When Lund was arrested, he was "uncooperative," and refused to be "mugged and printed," according to the report.

Lund is charged with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, resisting an officer, refusing to be fingerprinted, and failure to drive right.

Cops: Riverside man flees after crashing car in Stamford

A Riverside man who police say chased after an off-duty medic who was calling 911 to report the man's crash into a Washington Boulevard median early Tuesday was arrested and charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, police said.

Christopher Lund, 24, of Gilliam Lane, Riverside, was charged with evading responsibility, resisting arrest, second-degree breach of peace, possession of marijuana, use of drug paraphernalia and failure to drive right. He was held in lieu of $5,000 bond.

An off-duty emergency medical technician saw Lund drive over a median at the corner of Cold Spring Road and Randall Avenue and strike a Stamford Hospital sign, Stamford police Capt. Thomas Lombardo said.

The medic, who was driving, stayed behind the car and saw it continue down Cold Spring Road, according to police. Past where Cold Spring turns into Washington Boulevard, the medic came up to the vehicle where it had crashed into another median and became stuck, Lombardo said....

Riverside boy takes lead role in opera at Lincoln Center

NEW YORK -- Eli Abbasi might not be thrilled about all the work that has piled up in the last two weeks he has missed classes at Eastern Middle School, but that won't matter much when he takes the stage of Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center on Saturday.

The 13-year-old Riverside resident is taking on the title role in a production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors," a one-act opera by composer Gian Carlo Menotti that is put on regularly at Christmas time.

It's an enormous role, and Eli, who auditioned with the encouragement of his mother, will be performing among seasoned professional singers.

"I've sung in front of people before, but never like this," said Eli, after a full day of rehearsal recently at Columbia University, more than 50 blocks north of the concert hall.....

Riverside man taking molestation case to trial

A former Greenwich High School teaching aide charged with molesting a 10-year-old boy has opted for a jury trial after failing to come to a resolution with prosecutors, according to his lawyer.

Andrew Knapp, 28, of Riverside, was charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor earlier this year after police said he inappropriately touched a boy while showering in the locker room at the Greenwich Boys & Girls Club.

Knapp's attorney, Rob Serafinowicz, said after meeting with prosecutors several times, they have decided to fight the charges at trial to clear Knapp's name. Knapp has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

"This case will go to trial and a jury will see the truth," Serafinowicz said. "My client looks forward to this trial and dealing with this matter and moving on with his life."

Detectives began investigating Knapp when a Greenwich boy's parents became suspicious of Knapp's behavior and asked their son about him. The son said that Knapp had touched him on four occasions while in the locker room shower. In each instance, Knapp allegedly came into the shower stall naked and asked to borrow some shampoo and if the boy could wash his back where he could not reach, according to the warrant. The victim told police that on three of the four occasions, Knapp washed the boy's back and Knapp's hands went "from his back to the top of (the boy's) buttocks," according to the warrant.

Knapp worked at the Boys & Girls Club as a swim instructor. He was also employed by Greenwich High School. Since his arrest, he has resigned from both positions.....

Riverside Home Sales Slow

Russell Pruner, the owner of Riverside-based Shore & Country Properties, who also compiles sales figures, noted that inventory is currently very high, and homes are not falling off the market.

For example, of the 95 single-family homes priced between $2 million and $3 million currently on the market, there are only around 14 sales pending.

Pruner said he recommends people planning to sell their homes list them earlier in 2011, while mortgage rates remain low, which could lure buyers.

Last Spring, Temple Sholom and Christ Church created our "Sholom Center" for Interfaith Learning and Fellowship. Over the years our great and leading houses of worship have created a warm and vibrant friendship, and we've steadily increased our collaborative programming.

Now, our "Sholom Center" further deepens the wonderful relationship and expands to include other houses of worship, and mission compatible organizations.

This week our Sholom Center presents on Thursday, December 2^nd, at 6 PM, a Celebration of Light. We will gather in front of Christ Church as we share together from our different faith traditions the powerful symbols of God's light within our world. I will publically light the Chanukah Menorah, and Rev. Lemler will light the Christmas Tree. All of us gathered will share in the holiday cheer, along with some warm apple cider and sacred music from our respective faith traditions.

As we celebrate Chanukah this evening, we are enjoying our own particularistic Festival of Lights. Light is a very important element in many different religious traditions and holidays. Light is a symbol of the Divine Presence within our lives, and our constant desire to cast away the darkness of gloom and despair, and replace it with the brightness of hope and renewal.

It is not coincidental that Chanukah comes in December; the darkest time of the calendar year. While nature may have diminished the sunlight within our day; we light our Hanukkah menorah as a public testimony that God's light is never diminished when we are here to pursue holiness in our lives.

2200 years ago King Antiochus tried to force his pagan religion on us. But, led by Judah the Maccabee, we revolted and defeated the overwhelming forces of Antiochus' Syrian armies. The importance to Western Civilization of our Jewish victory can't be underrated. If we had lost and subsequently been assimilated to the surrounding pagan Greek culture, there would be today no Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. Our defeat would have stymied the entire ethical evolution of the Western World.

When we light our Chanukah menorah, we recall that when the Maccabean army got to Jerusalem, they found that the Syrians had desecrated our Temple. The Temple's "eternally lit" Menorah; the seven branch lamp-stand that was a main feature of the Temple; had been extinguished and needed to be rekindled.

According to rabbinic legend there was only enough oil to keep the Menorah lit for one day, but a miracle happened, and it stayed lit for eight days until there was the opportunity to get more oil.

It is important to recall that approximately 250 years after the Maccabbean rededication of the Temple; it was subsequently destroyed completely by the Romans. Eventually, after this cataclysmic destruction the Jews rose in revolt against Rome, led by Bar Kokhba. Unfortunately, this revolt was crushed, and there was a huge and horrible slaughter of the Jews. After the crushing militaristic defeat, the rabbis pursued more pacifist means to resist Rome, and wanting to avoid Chanukah's emphasis on the Maccabbees military victory, chose to stress the "miracle" of Chanukah; that God saves the spirit of our People; no matter the circumstances.

We publically light our Chanukah lights,originally with oil, but in the Middle Ages we began to use candles like our Christian neighbors. When we kindle the "lights" we are marking the light of God's Presence.

There are three main Jewish concepts on "light":

1) The light of day.

2) Light, as a manifestation of God's presence.

3) God's light can be shared with all human beings.

In the Book of Ecclesiastes, the blessing of wisdom is "seeing the light of God's face.... The light shines for the righteous."

In the Book of Isaiah, God tells us that the mission of our Jewish lives is to be "a light to the nations".

The traditional Priestly Blessing, recited constantly over our children: "May God cause the light of his countenance to shine upon you." The light of God's presence is our greatest of blessings. When God said at creation: "let there be light", and there was light, God saw that it was very good. What God created was both the normal light of nature, but, also the supernatural light; the light of God's presence; that is for the "good".

Our concept of light in Judaism is also present in the Christian religion. You can read of this concept in Christian Advent hymns, and also in common Christmas Carols. A common Christmas ritual tradition is to light candles around the circumference of their wreath 4 candles, one for each of the four Sundays of the Advent season. An additional white candle in then lit in the middle of the wreath. Their interpretation is that the first candle stands for the Hebrew prophets; the second Candle for their Christian prophets; the third for Mary; and the fourth candle is lit for all people. The fifth candle is lit to symbolize "God's light coming into the world."

Christmas for Christians is their particularistic celebration of God's light, and Chanukah for us is our particularistic celebration of God's light. When Christians and Jews gather together; sharing respectively our particularistic light; we enable the mitzvah of accessing universalistic light that is God's presence in our lives. The light of God shines brightest among us, when we can foster understanding, tolerance and peace, not just between are sibling religions, but among all of humanity.

"This is going to be the first time in a long time that instead of seeing the mill rate dropping we're going to see the mill rate rise," said Russell Pruner, an owner and partner of Shore & Country Properties and a past president of the Greenwich Association of Realtors.

A number of residential properties saw their assessments plummet by 20 percent, according to Greenwich Assessor Ted Gwartney, who said the average decrease was 13 percent. Assessments are 70 percent of full market value.

The neighborhoods with the sharpest drop-off were Byram and Chickahominy, Gwartney said.

At the opposite end of the spectrum were waterfront properties in Riverside, which Gwartney said was the only neighborhood to experience a slight increase in assessments.

Connecticut Post Says Fedele The Choice Among Republicans

Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele has the combination of government and business experience that, given the chance to serve in the No. 1 seat, would be good for the state of Connecticut.

The Connecticut Post endorses his candidacy in the Aug. 10 Republican three-way primary.

The 55-yearold Fedele brings 10 years of legislative experience, serving in the state House of Representatives from 1992 to 2002, and three years in his current position.

But Fedele is also a self-made businessman and understands that job creation is the top challenge to the state.

Fedele understands in no uncertain terms that improving the atmosphere in Connecticut for small business is essential to turning around the state's economy.

His stand against any new taxes speaks to his understanding of the situation.

We compliment him for his position.

Given his experience, Fedele is confident solutions to the state's problems of spending and borrowing can be resolved through good management, and not through new taxes.Though Fedele has been part of the Rell administration ... well, that in some respects sums it up.

It was indeed the Rell administration, and if anyone can name a Connecticut lieutenant governor who shaped policy from that office, we'd be curious to know who it was.

Fedele rightly says he can be held accountable only for those areas in which he had authority.

He's been an effective ambassador for the state, recruiting business and reaching out to the Henkel Corporation, manufacturer of Loctite adhesive products and successfully encouraging them to consolidate operations in Rocky Hill.

Fedele also figured in the move of Columbia Elevators from New York to Bridgeport.

We also applaud Oz Griebel, another candidate in the GOP primary, for his passion and clear commitment to improving the business climate in the state.

And Tom Foley brings a business background as well. But he also brings some unpleasant baggage to the race.

But Fedele earns our endorsement. We believe he's the best of the three choices to lead the state.
